G for a food blogger has to be about garnish and garnishing. So G is for Garnish and importance of garnishing in the world of culinary professionals and also for anyone who loves cooking as well as eating. Garnishing a food item not only livens up its presentation but also at times adds to its taste. So what is garnishing or rather what is garnish? Let’s see what it means and how its presence can make or break the dish.

According to Wikipedia, a garnish is any item that is used as a decoration or embellishment accompanying a prepared food dish or drink. In most of the cases a garnish gives added or contrasting flavour to the dish or drink. Garnishes are selected on the basis of either enhancing the visual appeal of the cooked food or to add special flavour to the food. And usually it is in contrast to the base flavour of the prepared sauce product of the dish.

Ok! There was nothing new in the above written lines and nothing that we don’t know already after all we all love cooking and love to decorate the prepared food with numerous items including – gems on cakes, dry fruits on other desserts among other things and this decorating is what we call garnishing. But did you know that a food item that is served as a garnish may be described as ‘garni’ – a French term for garnished. Yes, again French! These French are quite particular about their food.

Anyway so we were talking about garnishing. And here is another interesting part of garnishing – there are certain garnishes that are added just to enhance the visual appeal of the cooked food. They are not meant to be eaten. While there are others that are added not just to beautify the food but can be consumed along with the food! Some of the popular herbs that are used for garnishing include Parsley – the pungent green herb with small distinctly shaped leaves – is a classic example of traditional garnish. Parsley with its firm stems and distinctive shape of leaves is quite easy to trim.

Certain dishes have their permanent garnishes and those dishes seem incomplete without its garnish. The most common example would be of banana split with sundae with cherries on top. Here cherries are garnish and this dish seems totally incomplete without cherry. So now we know how important garnish and garnishing are to create a dish that is not only visually appealing but is also appetising. Some of the things a chef uses to create food garnishes include skewers, knives, graters, toothpicks, and parchment cones.
